Microsilica Powder

One of the main reasons for the permeability of concrete is the presence of fine and microscopic voids between the aggregates, which are formed due to a lack of fillers and fine particles. Additionally, during the hydration process, the evaporation of water creates capillary tubes, which further increases the permeability of the concrete. To reduce this permeability, the use of silica fume or microsilica powder as a suitable additive is recommended. Silica fume particles, which are finer than cement grains, can effectively fill these microscopic spaces. Microsilica powder is a gray-colored powder that contains about 94-96% silicon dioxide (SiO2), and it is produced during the production of ferrosilicon in electric arc furnaces. This powder is added to concrete during production to enhance certain properties. As a result, adding silica fume to concrete compresses the cement paste structure, reduces permeability, and increases the concrete’s strength.

How to use micro-silica powder

Micro-silica powder can be added to the concrete mix using one of the following methods:

1- The micro-silica powder can be combined with a portion of the mixing water to create a slurry, which is then added to the concrete mix.

2- The silica fume can be added to the dry components during the concrete mixing process.

3- The best method is to combine the micro-silica powder with a portion of the mixing water and a specific amount of concrete plasticizer, then mix it thoroughly using a high-speed mixer before adding it to the concrete.
